Doctoral Student

Chi (he/him) is a first-year Ph.D. student advised by Dr. Jan Kleissl at the Center for Energy Research. He earned his Bachelor of Science in ECE from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Master of Science here at UCSD. Chi loves to learn new things and tackle challenges. This passion, combined with a commitment to sustainable and autonomous clean energy systems, led him naturally to the research lab
In his free time, Chi enjoys playing tennis and Dota 2. He was a member of the UCSD Division 1 Esports team, which took third place in a national tournament. When luck allows, Chi is found at ease on his bed, captivated by anime.
Chi’s research interests mainly lie at the intersection of optimization, controls, machine learning, and energy systems. His past research has focused on constructing foundational platforms and computational tools that allow researchers to directly design and implement their RL (Reinforcement Learning) and control paradigms for benchmarking tasks. These tasks include grid frequency control, voltage regulation, and building HVAC system operations. His current research is centered on smart HVAC systems in buildings, as well as the charging and discharging of electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries.
